What colour is sapphire?
Sapphires occur in many different colours but the most valuable and best known is one that is a rich intense blue. The other colours that sapphires come in include pink, orange, yellow, purple and black.
What is a ceylon sapphire?
Ceylon sapphires are the finest quality sapphire in the market today. Ceylon sapphires come in a range of light blue to dark blue - the darker the colour, the finer the gemstone. Although Ceylon is now called Sri Lanka, the name Ceylon is still used in the jewellery industry.
Are sapphires harder than diamonds?
Sapphires are not quite as hard as diamonds. Diamonds are rated 10 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, while sapphires are rated a nine. Sapphires are a great choice for jewellery pieces that will get a lot of everyday wear, like an engagement ring, due to their toughness – they don’t break easily when struck.
Do sapphires scratch?
As sapphires are second only to diamonds on Mohs hardness scale, they can only be scratched by diamonds and other sapphires (depending on hardness).
If you do notice some small scratches on your sapphire, it can be resurfaced by a master jeweller.
Do sapphires fade?
The only colours of sapphires that are known to have a fading colour property are yellow and padparadscha sapphires.

Sapphires and rubies are both from the ‘corundum’ family (corundum is a mineral). Both are made from alumina and oxygen, they just differ in colour. When a sapphire appears red, it is a ruby, and when it appears blue, it is a sapphire.
