A pink diamond is a real diamond. Diamonds can come in a range of colours – depending on what elements they are exposed to underneath the earth’s crust, they can range from white/colourless, to red, yellow, orange, green, blue, pink, purple, brown, violet, gray and black.

 Around 80-90% all mined pink diamonds came from Australia via the Argyle Mine in WA. Argyle Pink Diamonds are so expensive because of the very limited supply – the mine closed in 2020.

While other coloured diamonds have traces of chemical elements to make them coloured, a pink diamond is different. A pink diamond is formed of carbon only like a white diamond, through millions of years -  the colour is caused by an alteration in the diamond's make-up, created by huge pressure and heat from all directions after the stone had formed in the earth. 

The pink diamond is very rare. The closure of the major producer of pink diamonds in 2020, has meant there is now a very limited of supply of pink diamonds in the world. Even when the mine was functioning, for every one million carats of diamond produced, only one carat was of high-quality pink colour.

Pink diamonds are most often found in fancy shapes like cushion, oval, emerald, radiant, pear and emerald cuts. That's because the round brilliant cut tends to dilute the colour of pink diamonds.

When it comes to coloured diamonds, the focus of the cut should be on maximizing the colour of the stone, and not the brilliance or sparkle – in the case of pink diamonds, they are better off with fancy cuts like cushion, oval, emerald, radiant, pear and emerald cuts, which maximise colour.

Due to the rarity of the pink diamond, they can often be up to 20 times for expensive than a white diamond. The more intense the colour of the pink diamond, the more expensive it will be.
