Propose with the perfect marquise diamond engagement ring
The ‘cut’ of a diamond refers to the alignment of angles (facets), proportion and dimensions of a diamond.
These elements determine the sparkle and brilliance of a diamond. Diamonds are graded based on their cut as either; excellent, very good, fair and poor. Marquise cut diamonds can be slender, or wide. For optimal light reflection, a marquise diamond should be cut gracefully. Symmetry is very important when it comes to the perfect marquise cut diamond. Both end points of the diamond should align with each other and both sides should be a mirror of one another.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a marquise diamond?
The marquise diamond is a ‘modified’ brilliant cut with a point at each end and a sophisticated elongated surface. Its history dates back to 18th century France and was created for a royal who wanted a ring that resembled his lover's lips. The marquise cut diamond possesses the largest crown surface of any diamond, carat for carat, and its long, slender shape can have the effect of looking larger on the finger compared to other shapes.
Are marquise cut diamonds popular?
The marquise cut diamond is a very unique shape and therefore doesn’t suit everyone’s tastes. However, it is a great shape if your aim is to elongate your finger, or to have the stone appear large on your finger. New life has been breathed into the shape in recent years when designers have used the halo effect, which is very popular, or to use the shape in an ‘east west’ direction for something truly unique. Whether the shape is popular or not should not sway your decision however – whatever style you like, is right for you! Our amazing team can customise any ring you set your heart on, and find you the perfect diamond!
How many facets in a marquise cut diamond?
The marquise diamond generally has 58 facets, which is the same as the round brilliant cut, but can be cut with 4, 6, or 8 facets in its pavilion facets.
Do marquise diamonds sparkle?
The marquise cut has a similar facet pattern to the round brilliant cut which gives it an enviable brilliance, and a well-cut marquise diamond will absolutely offer a gorgeous sparkle. As the marquise cut tends to look slightly larger than other fancy cut diamond shapes of the same carat weight, the marquise is worth considering if you want a diamond that combines presence and sparkle.
Are marquise diamonds cheaper?
Marquise diamonds are one of the most affordable shapes. They are of great value when you consider that their elongated shape makes them look larger than other cuts of the same carat.
What is the bowtie effect?
The ‘bow tie effect’ can affect several diamond shapes, including the marquise, by casting a dark and distracting shadow, that looks like a bow tie, over the middle area of the stone. This often occurs in poorly cut stones and is something to look out for.
Our specialist diamond staff will always source quality stones for you, so feel free to discuss your requirements with them.
