A prong or claw set engagement ring refers to the metal claws that extend from the rings basket.

The prong or the claw is what secures the diamond or gemstone in place. There are many varieties and combinations of prong/claw set 4 prong, 6 prong, and split prong settings. Prong or claw set stones allow the most light to enter the stone.

  • 4 prong engagement rings

    A 4-prong setting allows for maximum light to enter the diamond or gemstone enabling the diamond to do what it does best, sparkle. 4 prong settings are recommended when your centre stone is under 1 carat.

    Additional prongs on 1 carat and under diamonds can distract from the diamond itself. An option to strengthen your prong setting is to set it in platinum as platinum is a stronger metal that gold there is less likelihood of the prong breaking.

  • 6 prong engagement rings

    In a 6-prong setting, the metal prongs are generally more refined that a 4 prong, minimising the diamond coverage while maximising the surface area for light to infiltrate. It is recommended for diamonds 1 carat or over to have 6 prongs that secures the diamond safely in place.

  • 8 prong engagement rings

    An 8 prong setting makes the setting very secure and accentuates the curves of the stone shape. 8 prong settings work well with round stones and are recommended for large carat weight stones (3 carat and above).
